Swim Deep Only in Waters You Know – spoken
I love this story because l love this river.
The field recordings that provide the soundscape to this production were captured by me on the Barwon River at Brewarinna, the Murrumbidgee River at Wagga Wagga and the Murray herself. The river you hear is the Murray River, the Millewa, running past at Mungabareena, Albury.
The clapsticks are playing the rhythmn of a chant I devised, that cycles the Aboriginal language names of the rivers.
I produced this work at StudioRCC, Redfern Community Centre.
I owe thanks to Gretchen Miller, ABC Radio National, and to Tania Bowra for supporting me through this, my first production for radio.
The photograph, taken by Lawrence Shearer, is of the story’s exact location.
Swim Deep Only in Waters You Know was first broadcast on radio for a Sydney audience on Radio FBI’s program All the Best and travelled on from here to receive national airplay on Radio National.
